Melissa McCarthy heads back to college in 'Life of the Party'

Melissa McCarthy is reuniting with director Ben Falcone on the big screen for the upcoming comedy Life Of The Party.

It's McCarthy's first movie since 2016's Ghostbusters, as she's been busy filming the second season of TV Land's Nobodies on which she appears as herself, as well as playing Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live. But now she's back with a new summer comedy that will take her back to school. "I'll see you around the quad!"

Even though there's a slapstick moment in the beginning with that tiny explosion in the driveway, the rest of the trailer isn't all that silly.

"I don't regret staying home and being your mom", she tells her kids in the trailer, "but I regret not getting my degree". After literally trying to set fire to her old life, she naturally decides that going back to school alongside her daughter is a better decision.

Deanna's return to college presents McCarthy with plenty of opportunities to embarrass her daughter, but as the trailer demonstrates, that's not really the goal of the movie - at least not the entire film. It co-stars Debby Ryan, Gillian Jacobs, Julie Bowen, Maya Rudolph and Jacki Weaver. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna-now Dee Rock-embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.
