Napoli set club record with another Serie A win

Italian Serie A leaders Napoli edged struggling visitors Spal 1-0 to stay one point clear of champions Juventus for a ninth straight matchday.

Juventus' derby win over Torino by the same scoreline earlier on Sunday temporarily sent the champions to the summit, but Allan's first-half strike at the San Paolo moved Napoli back above them by a point.

Juve defeated city rivals Torino by the same scoreline for a tally of 65 points from 25 games.

The two Serie A pacesetters registered their ninth consecutive league wins.

Juventus are eyeing a seventh straight title while Napoli are looking to win the title for the first time since 1990.

Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri can not get his players interested in playing in the Europa League, he said on Sunday as he described European football's second tier club competition as invasive. "You can't afford to reach the 90th minute of a game like that with just a one-goal advantage". "We were behaving as if we were 3-0 up, not 1-0".

In Turin, Juventus top scorer Gonzalo Higuain suffered a sprained ankle while winger Federico Bernardeschi injured his left knee in the bruising "Derby Della Mole".

In the battle for European places Sampdoria, in sixth, travel to AC Milan, just below them, later on Sunday.

Juventus already have a long injury list with Mario Mandzukic, Blaise Matuidi and Juan Cuadrado recovering but Argentine Paulo Dybala returned from a hamstring injury in the second half.

"I am proud of the lads and today we saw a good reaction, as we enjoyed ourselves even during hard moments".

But the underdogs defended resolutely from that point on and held Napoli to their single goal lead, despite Hamsik's impassioned belief that he'd scored his side's second of the game on the hour mark.

Table-propping Benevento twice came from behind and then beat Crotone with an 89th minute goal by Cheick Diabate, the Malian scoring 12 minutes after coming on for his debut following his move on loan from Osmanlispor.
