Palestinian kills Israeli near West Bank settlement

Israel's military said its forces had been searching in Burqin for suspects involved in the fatal drive-by shooting of an Israeli rabbi from a nearby settlement on January 9. But the militant Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas called it a "continuation of the resistance" to the controversial USA decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "The same applies to the murderers of Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal".

CCTV footage of Monday's attack shows Mr Ben Gal waiting on a roadside.

Israeli forces have been hunting for the assailants since then, with roadblocks and checkpoints set up following the murder.

"We will not rest until we bring them to justice".

The Israeli government has officially recognised the illegal settlement outpost of Havat Gilad in response to the death of an Israeli settler who was shot in the area. The army said an Israeli soldier pursued the attacker in his auto and hit him with the vehicle, but he escaped. The settler was reported to be in critical condition. "But when we found the Quran, which has an inscription to Ahmad from his mother, we knew it was him". "My heartfelt condolences to his family, his wife and children and loved ones". "These are hard moments, but are people come together during such times".

He praised the security forces for their successful operation.

Zehava Galon, who chairs the dovish Meretz party, referred to the victim as "another person who was murdered on the altar of unnecessary conflict".

"We will continue the path of resistance until the Israeli occupation is defeated from every inch of our land", the statement said.

The vote came as European nations voiced growing concern over settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territory, but with US President Donald Trump largely refraining from such criticism, which many Israelis see as a green light.

"I call on the prime minister, the ministers and the Knesset members - it is your responsibility to prevent the next attack", he added.
