Mourinho later explained that he was asking Pogba to concentrate on his game and substituting him was a tactical decision.

Matt Ritchie scored the victor and after the game, Mourinho appeared to blame Paul Pogba for costing United the game, with his involvement in the build-up to the goal.

In a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on 31 January, the pair were overrun with the France worldwide taken off after 63 minutes and he was subsequently dropped for the following game against Huddersfield Town. Pogba will clearly, or should be, central to Mourinho's plans, but returns of just 7 FPL points from 4 Premier League games (Burnley, Spurs, Huddersfield and Newcastle) show just how ineffective Pogba has been.

Keane, as an iconic midfielder of the past, is better placed than most to provide an opinion on how to operate in that area of the field.

The Daily Record claim there is growing friction between Pogba and his manager over what position he plays in United's starting XI.

The 24-year-old was withdrawn in two of United's last three games, including the away defeats to Tottenham and Newcastle.

It will be fascinating to see how Manchester United, Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba all react to this setback.

Mourinho however feels that given Pogba's strength and technical ability, he should be able play comfortably in any midfield role.

'The guy needs to do better himself and focus on what football is really about'.

After paying so much to bring back the hottest midfield prospect in the world two years ago, Mourinho should at least give him the chance to play where he wants.

Keane's criticism can be blunt, but Mourinho would probably agree with him, in private at least.

Now, according to L'Equipe, Pogba has demanded to have his role changed with the left side of a midfield three his preferred position.
