Both of Porter's ex-wives told the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the abuse they had experienced, as well as the potential for blackmail against Porter.

"How in the hell was he still employed?"

"Who knew what when, and to what extent?"

House Speaker Paul Ryan quickly gave public backing to the investigation.

Trump says: "I am totally opposed to domestic violence and everybody here knows that".

One week after Rob Porter, his staff secretary, resigned amid spousal abuse allegations, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was "totally opposed to domestic violence", his first condemnation of the alleged conduct behind a scandal that has engulfed the White House.

Gowdy told CNN that the committee launched a probe Tuesday night into Porter's employment and when White House officials knew about the domestic violence allegations levied against him. "Now you all hear it".

Further, the experts said, it would normally be McGahn's responsibility to alert the president and chief of staff that Porter was not fit to receive classified information.

Trump was aware before the event that Pence would make the supportive comments, a person familiar with the matter said.

Trump went on to emphasize that Porter had not admitted any wrongdoing.

Wray testified that the FBI submitted a complete investigation on Porter in late July. Porter was awarded temporary security clearance and continued to work for the White House.

George David Banks served on the National Economic Council as a special assistant to the president for worldwide energy and environmental policy since February 2017.

"And then we administratively closed the file in January, and then earlier this month we received some additional information and we passed that on as well", Wray added in his congressional testimony Tuesday, without elaboration.

Coats said, "We have a broken system and I think everybody's come to agree with that now".

NBC reported that it was unclear whether some employees have had their clearance status changed since the time of the documents.

Murphy, who handled national security issues at the Pentagon and sits on the House Armed Service Committee, made her case on Wednesday for her "Protect America's Secrets Act" proposal.
