Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is also in line for his maiden call-up after pledging allegiance to his father's country of birth, despite the best efforts of England boss Gareth Southgate.

McTominay, Barnsley striker Oli McBurnie, Wolves left-back Barry Douglas, Hearts goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, Hibernian midfielder Dylan McGeouch and Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna have all been included for the friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary later this month.

Millwall 'keeper Jordan Archer, Rangers winger Jamie Murphy - on loan from Brighton - and Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald have also been recalled to the squad, having previously been uncapped.

McLeish was unable to select a number of experienced players through injury, including Craig Gordon, James Morrison, Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher, but others have failed to make the pool, including Robert Snodgrass and Darren Fletcher.

"Scott's a good player and I remember his beginnings when sometimes he wasn't even on the bench".

"It's a great opportunity".

"The next step is the guys [must] prove it", he said.

He added: "It was enormously flattering, there's a huge interest in the national team".

"It is great for that link and the knowledge within the senior staff of what is available to them". Another moved to Leicester, Wilfred Ndidi.

Young McTominay, for one, will no doubt heed Carrick's rallying call.

But McLeish refused to shut the door on Darren Fletcher or any other player.

In an era when young players seem more interested in the trappings of fame rather than improvement on the pitch Carrick, who will be 37 in July, said: "Scott doesn't seem too interested in all the glitz and the glamour that can surround young players these days". "In terms of Darren, he is not playing at the moment. So I think his humble nature is what is making him a good player for us".

"I did speak to Darren and said: 'Look, I'm ruling nothing out.' The future is still there for guys like Darren".
