Case Keenum To Sign With The Denver Broncos

Case Keenum To Sign With The Denver Broncos

After sitting out the playoffs in each of the last two years following their Super Bowl 50 triumph, the Broncos have apparently found their next signal-caller. Brock Osweiler is a free agent and isn't expected back with the Broncos.

According to a team source, two factors solidified Denver's pursuit of Keenum: The strong support of Broncos senior personnel adviser Gary Kubiak, and a player-friendly contract structure that is being pursued by Kirk Cousins. That would leave the Vikings, Jets and Cardinals in the running to land Kirk Cousins.

Keenum threw for 22 touchdowns and only seven interceptions while going 11-3 as a starter for the Vikings in place of the injured Sam Bradford last season.

Manning had a spectacular closing chapter in Denver, leading the Broncos to the playoffs in all four of his seasons, reaching two Super Bowls and winning one.

Keenum would have veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders as his targets in Denver after Elway chose not to release either of the expensive wide receivers.

ESPN first reported that Keenum would sign with the Broncos. Instead of being forced into drafting a quarterback, the Broncos may be able to consider running back Saquon Barkley and guard Quenton Nelson, with of whom are considered the best prospects at their respective positions in quite some time. Don't be surprised if the Broncos maybe wait on taking a quarterback in the draft. This collection of draft picks would set the Broncos up nicely for both the 2018 and 2019 drafts. We didn't play well there previous year.

With Keenum on board, the Broncos are expected to keep Paxton Lynch as their backup quarterback and possibly trade Trevor Siemian.

The fact that the Broncos didn't think highly enough of Cousins as a realistic option that they didn't even offer him a contract is particularly surprising.

But by signing Keenum, they save money against the salary cap that will allow them to make fixes to some other areas of need.
