Google at MWC 2018: more languages, AR, AI and longer updates

The company explained how new features would help developers work Assistant into apps without having to develop new code. Developers will also be able to deep link from their Actions in the Google Assistant to a specific intent in the Android app.

Actions on Google, the Google Assistant's version of what Amazon calls 'skills, ' have been around for a while, but Google today announced it is expanding the platform to support a wider group of global developers, in addition to a number of other features for the platform. The most significant update here is that there is now support for 7 new languages: Hindi, Thai, Indonesian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Dutch.

Fox said Google Assistant will also gain multilingual speech later this year, allowing the assistant to understand you fluently in multiple languages, instead of just one. To aid developers with this expansion, the company is making it easier to bring Actions on Google overseas, while apps will be better able to integrate with Assistant.

Finally, for those who are more familiar with using the Assistant, Google is cutting out some of the repetitive introduction. The new additions take the tally up to 15 languages for Assistant. The company has announced that the digital assistant has added even more languages and that more are on the way before the year is through. "As you integrate these links in your Action, you'll make it easier for your users to find what they're looking for and to move seamlessly to your Android app to complete their user journey", explains Google. This feature will let developers create Actions to connect the Assistant for info or tasks in their respective apps. Google showed off the feature by asking Assistant about a parking reservation with Spothero. The service will be rolling out to all developer accounts in the coming weeks, but the documentation is online if any want to get a head start. If u believe that Alexa is an evolution, then Google's Assistant is a whole new revolution. Once the location details have been sorted out with the user, the Assistant returns the conversation back to your Action so the user can finish the interaction.

2018 looks to be busy when it comes to smart computers doing smarter things, and Assistant will be right in the middle of it all.
