Kobe Bryant is an Oscar victor

The retired NBA star won the best animated short category at Sunday's Academy Awards for "Dear Basketball", based on his 2015 poem for The Players Tribune. "To be here now and have this sense of validation, this is insane man".

In December, Bryant spoke to Yahoo Sports about the making of the film.

Glen Keane and Kobe Bryant accepted. Bryant describes how he and basketball have given each other all they have.

Bryant retired from the National Basketball Association in 2016 after playing 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. "That was definitely an ignorant comment", he said. "You have to learn the basics of things", he said. "And to my wife, Vanessa, our daughters, you are my inspiration".

Backstage, Bryant credited Oprah Winfrey and writer-producer Shonda Rhimes for sharing their knowledge of the entertainment business.

Although this is Bryant's first Oscar nomination, the former athlete and Academy faced criticism for his nomination despite the #MeToo movement.

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, it will be a reminder that Bryant was arrested over the suspected rape of a 19-year-old hotel worker in Colorado in 2003.

Jeanie Buss, chief executive of the Los Angeles Lakers, where Bryant spent the whole of his 20-year career, also tweeted her congratulations, adding "you continue to inspire".

The accuser later filed a separate civil lawsuit against Bryant which was settled out of court; the terms of the settlement were never made public.
