Marcus Smart Out 'Indefinitely' With Torn Tendon In Thumb

To make matters worse, the Celtics have to deal with Marcus Smart's pesky thumb injury.

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is being evaluated for a potentially torn right thumb tendon and is seeking multiple opinions, two people with knowledge of the situation told Celtics Wire under the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Irving is expected to miss some time while his knee heals. Smart had his thumb taped up and returned to finish the game.

It remains unclear just how much time Smart will miss, but this is another blow to the Celtics. There have been some conflicting reports about Smart's thumb injury, but Danny Ainge appears to know what's going on, per the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy.

Smart scored 20 points with eight assists and seven rebounds Sunday in a loss to the Pacers.

Theis had an MRI exam on his left knee on Monday morning, determining the need for surgery.

The Celtics are 4.3 points per 100 possessions better this season with Smart on the court, although surprisingly most of the bump is on the offensive end.

The 6-foot-9 Theis' absence will likely lead to more minutes for Aron Baynes and Greg Monroe. The 21-year-old is averaging 14.1 points and 5.2 rebounds.
