NCAA Predictions: Murray State vs. West Virginia to be Low-Scoring? 3/16/18

But, that will be the case when WVU (24-10) takes on Murray State (26-5) in an NCAA second round game at 4 p.m. today at the Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.

The senior guard and third-team All-American finished with 21 points, eight assists and six steals as his stellar play on both ends of the floor was a huge factor for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers are no strangers to the Big Dance, and this figures to be one of Bob Huggins' most talented teams to date. "I would love to win, so we would have the upset, but getting to the tournament is great for Murray State", Muenzberg said.

West Virginia is 10-8 against teams in the NCAA field, while Murray State is 0-1 with an 81-77 loss to Auburn on December 19. "We'll see what happens". -12 matchup Friday against Murray State.

"I would be shocked if he didn't play that way", Huggins said.

Murray State was unable to get any closer than 11 the rest of the game. Terrell Miller's monster performance of 27 points and 17 rebounds wasn't enough to save Murray State. They had four players in double figure.

The Racers committed 16 turnovers, made 7-of-23 from 3-point range and shot 41 percent overall.

What Carter did on Friday in the first-round of the East Region against Murray State is simply what Huggins expects.

Mountaineers freshman forward Teddy Allen added 16 points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward Sagaba Konate and junior forward Esa Ahmad finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Carter had 13 points in the second half and was the trigger of a second-half surge by the Mountaineers after Murray State had trimmed a 14-point lead down to five.

Possibly even more astounding was West Virginia's defensive effort on senior guard Jonathan Stark. State had plenty of the latter, hitting nearly 38% of its threes and featuring five different players who are realistic threats to make multiple long range shots, but it's the former, and the rebounding that must follow, that has MSU's attention.

After averaging 21 points per game in each of the past two seasons, Stark was held to only nine points on 1-for-12 shooting on Friday.

Murray State: The Racers will lament a first half where they were trailing from almost the outset.

The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Racers, who came in sporting the second longest streak in Division 1 behind Gonzaga's 15-gamer.

This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for head coach Matt McMahon who has been at the helm for three seasons. he has been able to continue the tradition built by Steve Prohm, who is now a familiar face to the Mountaineers because he coaches Iowa State. The Bison have qualified for a national postseason tournament in three consecutive years, falling to MI in the second round of the WNIT in 2016, Maryland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017, and now West Virginia in the WNIT this season.

West Virginia will press, cause havoc and look to get shots up. But Miller's hot hand would help pull Murray State rally.
