New season of 'American Idol' starts with a bang!

New season of 'American Idol' starts with a bang!

The judges may be different, but the panel of Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan nearly eerily mirrors the music genres and personalities of the final Fox judges, Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban. He sings a nice version of Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You". "You were perfectly on the beat, but Sinatra went (pause)", he told Zach. Of course, she gets a ticket.

Meanwhile, the reboot will also be different from the original "American Idol" in the sense that ABC won't put bad auditions at the front and center of every episode. Lionel thought he sounded nervous, but has tremendous talent.

Perry immediately replied, "Come here, Benjamin". Hard pass on this whole situation.

The other showcased contestants from NY include Maddie Poppe, who sings The Muppet Movie song "Rainbow Connection", and gets three yeses for her "storyteller voice"; and Koby, a 26-year-old musical theater performer from Denver, who belts perhaps the longest, loudest vocal run in Idol history. And she completes that mission with her rendition of Selena's "Techno Cumbia". All three judges pushed him through to the next round. And then one is down. Stars, they're just like us! "News" stylist, which was enough to make Best Actress nominees at the Oscars avoid his red-carpet interviews just a week earlier. A lot. But they send her to Hollywood to help her grow.

Also entertaining, but not as lucky?

Don't get it twisted - Katy Perry is outstanding and everything you want in a judge.

Glaze got a second chance and, this time, Perry surprised him by turning around for a quick kiss on the lips.

Fellow teen singers Andrew Weaver, Griffin Tucker and Christina Jones were all rolled into a montage about some of the younger folks who auditioned this season. Brandon succeeding in music is his dad's biggest dream - he's learned everything he knows from his dad and is doing this for him.

We're going to Hollywood. You just took a guitar with a hole in it, with three chords, and you made that thing have all the soul that it needs. This is something we saw when the judges were having fun with each other or with the contestants; as were the cases of Noah Davis' audition and (on the exact opposite end of spectrum) Koby's disastrous turn.

Construction worker and singer-songwriter Trevor Holmes auditioned next, announcing his crush on Perry right off the bat.

Catie with a "C" got true love from Katy with a "K" and songwriting praise from Lionel Richie. What a roller coaster!
