'This Is Us' Waits To Exhale With A Season Finale 'Wedding'

And there were teases of stories the show will deal with next season - Toby gets sick!

While another death or terminal disease would be devastating, the morbid truth remains that it would make a lot of sense for Rebecca to see Jack's welcoming face if she were to succumb to some kind of illness (and remember, she had that cancer scare all those years ago).

"People wanted to be so happy for Kate and Toby, and for the family, that it was really important to leave on a [happier] note".

Kevin and Randall go to find Kate. Within the latter half of this season alone, This Is Us gave us a heartbreaking miscarriage; an almost devastating vehicle accident that resulted in a DUI; a fire that nearly killed Jack Pearson, then didn't, but sort of did because he died of a heart attack afterward, all on Super Bowl Sunday; an eviction; and a wedding day that should have been focused on celebrating Toby and Kate but instead was dominated by the heavy grief and guilt Kate has been carrying for two decades with regard to her father's death. She heads to the old ice cream parlor that Jack used to take her to, but it has a new owner and completely new flavors. The dreams are about all of them being together at the cabin as Rebecca and Jack renew their vows.

We ultimately discover that they are indeed recurring dreams that Kate's been having. Rebecca tells her she is going to stay out of her way.

Nevertheless, the shirt isn't there and Kate is freaking out. It's poor Kate we're most anxious about.

While Randall, Beth, Tess and Annie enjoy the brief respite from the uncertainty that's about to come to their family and after wondering where Deja has run off to, we see Deja taking a baseball bat and smashing Randall's auto. They call Toby who is in the auto with his feuding divorced parents. They have concerns about Kate. They worry that he bends over backward for her, that he tiptoes around her so as not to set her off and that she is unstable.

Kate and Toby's flash-forward revealed that in a year Toby is going to fall into another deep depression. Looks like the Pearsons are going to be dealing with her abandonment issues heading into the next season. "And that's not to say that they are in danger of parting ways, but marriage is real and takes work".

Some fans think that the "her" that they are going to see could be Beth in the grave, Deja in jail, or someone in the hospital. Still, fans know how close Jack and Kate were, so his appearance is one that is well welcomed.

Kate exits the shop, again for an unknown destination, leaving the rest of her family to wait anxiously back at the cabin. He dishes one up that involves Kate running off and Toby dying. Meanwhile, Kevin (Justin Hartley) is in wedding planner mode. At one point, she breaks away from the family and all the pre-wedding activities and retreats to a spot in the woods she frequented with Jack with an urn of his ashes under her arm. Both are very profound speeches. This is clearly a trip to help Kevin connect to his father, but it's interesting that Beth's cousin is his new girl. The first steps were made tonight, but there is much work yet to be done to help Deja process her emotions. And since then, she's been happy, and she and Beth are like sisters. The father-daughter duo have one of the strongest connections in the Pearson family, so it wouldn't be a surprise if Kate was so desperate to have her dad present on her big day that she imagined, just for a moment, that he was. It would also contextualize Jack's potentially telling words to Rebecca, when he says, "Where'd the time go, Bec?" This sets Deja off, who then takes a bat to Randall's auto. He toasts about not knowing what the future holds or being able to control it but being able to control who you spend it with. Earlier in the episode, there was a beat when we thought he could potentially hook up with Kate's maid of honor Madison (Caitlin Thompson). Kevin meets Beth's attractive, smart and wise cousin Zoe at Kate and Toby's wedding.

Two emotional toasts and several nail-biting moments later, This Is Us fans can finally start throwing some rice in the air; Kate and Toby are officially married. Viewers briefly saw an older Randall and grown-up Tess (Eris Baker). Miguel is sweet and reminds her that at least she's not him.
