Trump ousts top diplomat Tillerson, replacing him with Central Intelligence Agency chief Pompeo

Donald Trump has replaced Rex Tillerson as US Secretary of State.

"I am proud to nominate the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Mike Pompeo, to be our new Secretary of State", the president told The Washington Post in a statement. "He will do a fantastic job!" he tweeted.

He continued, "Finally, I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

Gina Haspel, now deputy director of the CIA, will become the agency's first woman director of the CIA.

Trump's tweet Tuesday came the day after Tillerson blamed Russian Federation for an assassination in London - something the White House had specifically declined to do just hours before. "Congratulations to all!" Trump said on Twitter. The secretary has generally been cut out of the loop on major foreign policy moves, like Trump's impulsive decision to meet with Kim Jong-un.

Tillerson is the latest high-ranking official in the Trump administration to resign. The Secretary of State had previously been forced to deny media reports that he called Mr Trump a "moron".

Mr Trump thanked Mr Tillerson for his time working for the White House. Trump offered no explanation for the change. Mike and Gina have worked together for more than a year, and have developed a great mutual respect.

Tillerson also appeared out of the loop last week when Trump announced he would meet with North Korea's leader and become the first sitting US president to do so.
