Trump praises TV commentator Larry Kudlow as possible economic adviser

I take it one day at a time.

According to CNBC's Jim Cramer, Larry Kudlow is the leading contender to replace Cohn in the key economic role. "I think we're going to go through a circular trend of a much more restrained free market", he said then.

Trump was still hearing last-minute pleas from opponents of the tariff plan, and White House officials said they couldn't predict how the day would shake out.

Kudlow is CNBC's senior contributor and was previously the host of CNBC's prime-time "The Kudlow Report".

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that CNBC personality Larry Kudlow has "a very good chance" at replacing Cohn.

Cohn announced his resignation as NEC director last week in a move that was triggered by Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The president said last week that Cohn, the former top Goldman Sachs executive, was likely to return to his administration in the future.

Business leaders, meanwhile, continue to sound the alarm about the potential economic fallout from tariffs, with the president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce raising the specter of a global trade war. It was unclear how soon Trump would make up his mind.

Turnover after just over a year in office is nothing new, but the Trump administration has churned through staff at a dizzying pace since taking office last January, and allies are anxious the situation could descend into a free-fall.

Trump's praise for Kudlow came hours after he fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and nominated Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pompeo to replace him.

He did, however, float the possibility of Cohn returning to the White House in a different capacity. "He's done a great job", Kudlow said on the network's "Squawk Box" earlier this month.

"He's spoken to the president".
