Van Dijk: "I Needed to Step Up My Game"

Lemina has been one of Southampton's better performers in a hard season where they are flirting with relegation.

The transfer was finally completed after Van Dijk tried to force through a move to Liverpool last summer, with his transfer request rejected by Southampton who made a decision to block any move for the Dutchman despite his pleas to move to Anfield.

Mario Lemina arrived at Southampton from Juventus in the summer of 2017 as a direct replacement for Victor Wanyama. With Mane, Firmino, and Salah going forward and Emre Can seemingly on his way out, they need a strong tough-tackling midfielder to dominate in the centre of the park and it's questionable as to whether the 6ft Lemina can impress in the same way as the outgoing German.

And French outlet L'Equipe claim Liverpool are looking at Lemina in view to a potential transfer.

But the French outlet claim Liverpool are not done yet with their midfield recruitment and are hopeful of bringing in the Gabon global to further bolster their options middle of the park. "I needed to step up my game".

Lemina has so far represented Lorient, Marseille, Juventus and Southampton, making 105 top flight appearances.

It's unclear at the moment if Liverpool have a genuine interest in the player, as the transfer link between Liverpool and Southampton is a very easy one to make.

One point that may hinder Liverpool's chances of securing a move for Lemina could be their botched relationship with Southampton.

If they manage to stay up, it'll be interesting to see if they are willing to deal with Liverpool after the summer saga that surrounded Van Dijk. But, the Reds will have to be wary of not over-negotiating their way out of a transfer come summer.
