Where could Kim Jong Un meet Donald Trump?

President Trump is prepared to meet Kim Jong-un without any new concessions being agreed to by the North Korean leader, the White House has said - despite earlier demands that more guarantees were needed.

His visit is part of Seoul's efforts to rally support for the recent breakthroughs in bringing the North to talks and to get other key stakeholders including China, Russia and Japan on board. "He can start by nominating a qualified candidate for the position of USA ambassador to the ROK [Republic of Korea]".

Kim has agreed to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the Demilitarized Zone in late April, while Trump and the North Korean leader could meet by the end of May. What actions would it need to take to remove the military threat against Pyongyang and to reassure the regime of its safety? As Baik suggested, sometimes it takes a while to figure out what that message should be. Since North Korea refrained from conducting nuclear or ballistic missile tests during the Olympics and the US and South Korea had postponed their joint military exercises, Wang said that China's "dual freeze" proposal had proved to be the "right prescription for the problem and created basic conditions for the improvement of inter-Korean relations".

He said "North Korea's recent changes are the results of maximum pressure imposed by Japan, the US, and South Korea working closely together".

As Stanford political scientist Scott Sagan summarizes, "States will seek to develop nuclear weapons when they face a significant military threat to their security that can not be met through alternative means; if they do not face such threats, they willingly remain non-nuclear states."Kim is in this sense a rational actor in pursuit of regime survival and dynasty preservation, perceiving nukes as his sole effective tool". They also said Mr Kim would allow US-South Korean military exercises to continue in the months before the meeting, which was originally slated for May.

Even as the world reacts, North Korea has maintained silence, not responding to Trump's announcement last week.

"[The government] will deploy all possible means to respond to U.S. steel tariffs measures and make an all-out effort", he added, without elaborating.

The peninsula faces "an important opportunity for easing tension" and called on all sides to be "patient and cautious", the Chinese leader said.

President Moon's chief envoy praised the role of China and President Xi in nudging North Korea toward denuclearization and getting Pyongyang and Washington to agree to talks. It may be a first step, but I don't really think much has changed.

Just days after he stood outside the White House and announced the planned meet between the U.S. president and the North Korean leader, Chung Eui-yong was in Beijing to brief Xi and China's top diplomats on the fast-moving efforts to address the nuclear standoff.
