Andhra Pradesh to observe bandh over special status today

Andhra Pradesh came to a grinding halt on Monday in response to the bandh called by the Pratyeka Hoda Vibhajana Hameela Sadhana Samithi, who demanded that the state be granted Special Category Status.

Opposition parties such as the Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Jana Sena, Congress and the Left parties have extended their support to the shutdown. "The ruling Telugu Desam Party government in Andhra Pradesh, being a [former] coalition partner in the National Democratic Alliance Cabinet, did not pursue the matter", he claimed.

The report also said transport services between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are also likely to be affected as well with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation announcing that it will operate its buses only till the Andhra Pradesh state border.
Interestingly, ruling party Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has taken on the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre for its failure to grant the Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh and for its demand to implement the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act, has opposed the bandh and has chose to not participate in it.

Asserting that he contested from Dhone against the families of stalwarts such as former Chief Minister K. Vijayabhaskar Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister K.E. Krishnamurthy on the advice of TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao and won as MLA for three terms, he said Mr. Naidu owed an explanation for insulting him.

"Why this intimidation? As long as they are peaceful, we will continue all forms of democratic protests", Rambabu said.

He alleged that the state government had been issuing notices to those supporting the bandh, saying cases would be booked against them.

Leaders and activists of all opposition parties barring Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protest demonstrations across the state.
