Barbara Bush in 'failing health,' declines medical care

NEW YORK - Former first lady Barbara Bush has died "peacefully in her sleep", a spokesman for the Bush family said she died on Sunday evening.

"Following a recent series of hospitalisations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs Bush has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care", McGrath said in a statement.

Many have said she's a mighty presence, but at the same time, she and husband President George H.W. Bush are regular people. "She was 92. A Bush family spokesman said Bush passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by loved ones".

Former first lady Barbara Bush is in failing health, a source close to the Bush family tells CNN. Bush has chose to stop medical treatment. She has suffered for years from Graves Disease and most recently from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and congestive heart failure.

Bush is the wife of former President George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States who is now 93, and mother of 43rd President George W. Bush.

"We are grateful for her".

Barbara is now resting at the family home in Houston.

Maine Governor Paul LePage posted a tweet saying in part, "Barbara Bush is one of a kind, and she has been a wonderful friend and inspiration to so many people in Maine".

She campaigned for her son Jeb during the 2016 election.

What a well-lived life it has been for Barbara Bush.

Maine Medical Center President and CEO Rich Petersen released a statement saying, "Maine Medical Center and our children's hospital that is so honored to bear the name of First Lady Barbara Bush, is deeply saddened to learn of today's news. Mrs".

Along with her memoirs, she's the author of "C. Fred's Story" and "Millie's Book", based on the lives of her dogs.

Jim McGrath did not elaborate as to the nature of the 92-year-old Bush's health problems. Bush donated the proceeds of the books to her charity, which is aimed to improve the lives of American families through literacy. "And know the world is better because she's in it". The foundation partners with local programs and has awarded more than $40 million to create or expand more than 1,500 literacy programs nationwide.
