Barbara Bush leaves vivid memories as 'first lady of Houston'

When former first lady Barbara Bush stayed at her summer home at Walker's Point in Kennebunkport, she often headed to nearby Gooch's Beach to walk her two little Maltipoos, Bibi and Mini-Me.

"She was very philanthropic, she and George", Denk said.

Former first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton attended the service and were joined by current First Lady Melania Trump. I offered to replace her shoes, and she said 'oh no, that's fine - that dog over there peed on my foot already, so he just smelled that one.

Cheryl Cox's 10 year old Schnauzer, Maddie, was wearing official Barbara Bush pearls - complete with a clasp engraved with the initials "Bb", given to Cox by the first lady.

Since leaving the White House, Presidents Clinton and H.W. Bush have become great friends, with Barbara Bush even calling Clinton an adopted son on more than one occasion.

"In honor of Mrs".

Through her namesake foundation, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, she helped thousands of Houston kids learn to read and sparked friendships with star athletes.

Once the game started, everyone knew better than to bother Barbara: She meticulously kept score with a scorecard and stayed focused on the game, Hernandez said.

People in the crowd said they have only good memories of the Bushes, who patronized the local restaurants, roamed the aisles of the local Walmart at 6 a.m. and went about their daily lives like everyone else. She said she chatted with her about spaniels, and why some have bobbed tails, and some do not, several years ago.

Across Houston, people mourned her passing and celebrated her devotion to Texas' largest city. She brought such grace and class and dignity to everything she did.

"We just felt compelled to come and pay our respects", said David Parsons. "She was a treasure", Farr said.
