The man was flown to an area hospital Friday, but his condition was unknown.

Farmer said they passed about three on their way to Dewey County. Sander urged people to heed the warning to leave and let firefighters protect property.

Wheeling firefighters work to contain a large grass fire on the hillside in Fulton.

Gusts were expected to pick up Friday, which could lead to additional evacuations as winds could "push the fire into more populated area", Lehenbauer said.

Sander said some who had earlier been evacuated from the nearby town of Vici (vi-si) were being allowed to return home.

Some 450 people also have been evacuated in adjacent Woodward County, where a fire has burned 115-thousand acres.

"Not much sleeping just a lot of watching", Ms Loyd said.

Davis said they had to contend with steep terrain. "I did get out and drive around ... but extremely scary".

Fire staff officer Drew Daily says warm temperatures and low humidity are expected to continue creating very strong burning conditions on Friday.

Mr Lehenbauer said the wind has been changing direction, hindering firefighting efforts. "We're looking at a really, really rough day".

The state of emergency was issued for 52 counties, including Alfalfa, Beaver, Beckham, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Carter, Cimarron, Cleveland, Comanche, Cotton, Creek, Custer, Dewey, Ellis, Garfield, Garvin, Grady, Grant, Greer, Harmon, Harper, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnston, Kay, Kingfisher, Kiowa, Lincoln, Logan, Love, Major, Marshall, McClain, Murray, Noble, Oklahoma, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Osage, Pawnee, Payne, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Roger Mills, Seminole, Stephens, Texas, Tillman, Washita, Woods and Woodward.

Mr Lehenbaur said federal assistance in the form of firefighting personnel and equipment, including aircraft, has been sent to help battle the flames.
