CONFIRMED: Ford Mustang Returning To The Supercars Championship in 2019

Ford announced Tuesday morning that the Mustang will be the manufacturer's new body for the 2019 Cup season.

The new Mustang will lead Ford's renewed charge in a storied comeback to the Supercars Series.

As the Supercars series enables two-door coupes entry for the first time since its inception, Ford - in collaboration with DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing - has begun work on homologation of the Mustang for competition next year.

The brand will also supply both financial and technical assistance to leading Ford-aligned teams Tickford Racing and DJR Team Penske to develop the racing version of the vehicle.

The 2018 model Mustang, which was also unveiled on Tuesday, was deemed by Ford the flawless fit for the Gen2 regulations.

The new Ford Fiesta will be powered by a 1.0 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that chucks out 147kW and will be mated exclusively to a six-speed manual.

Ford has not finished testing the new Mustang, although a formal submission is due to NASCAR this summer.

The company announced today that it will help get the sixth-generation Mustang onto the Supercars grid for 2019, relegating its still-successful Falcon FG-X to Supercars history. Last year Ford Australia backflipped on its plan to release an official 500kW Roush supercharger kit for the Mustang. DJR Team Penske now runs two Fords, while Tickford Racing fields four entries.

"There is a strong appetite and passion for the Fiesta ST in our line-up, and we can see the affinity and esteem that Australians have with driving enjoyment of the existing model", said Ford Australia CEO, Graeme Whickman. Change cars first (from Falcon to Mustang), then look at changing power plants in the future.

The decision to make the Mustang even more visible has been made in the wake of the success it enjoys for several years.

"I know Australians, New Zealanders and our fans around the world will be just as excited as I am to see the Mustang take to our tracks in the world's best Touring vehicle racing".

"Ford Performance is about technology, innovation and product performance and to showcase our confidence in our performance range, we are bringing Mustang and the Ranger Raptor to the Supercars series in 2019".
