Congress demands rape accused should be hanged till death

Congress leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, held candlelight vigil in Delhi, demanding justice in Kathua and Unnao rape cases. On the Modi government's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" initiative, Gandhi said it was the right slogan and the Prime Minister must start work on "Beti Bachao".

Social justice and empowerment minister Arun Chaturvedi has stated that Congress took a jibe at Congress and said that their leader are making false statements and are trying to end the social harmony in the state in which they will not get successful. India wants to know: when?, Gandhi tweeted. Addressing a press conference here, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said the party's ministers in Jammu and Kashmir, who had slammed the police over its action against the rape accused, had been misled. "We had said this before as well, that women and children are in danger in your government", Azad was quoted as saying.

Apart from scores of Congress workers, there were also students, people from civil society groups, professionals and mediapersons in the march. His tweets made no mention of the BJP, but Congress leaders accused the Narendra Modi government of shielding rapists.

Sources said Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has asked party cadres to organise similar protests on Friday in support of protection of women.

The Kathua rape case relates to an eight-year-old girl from the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community who had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in the Jammu region on 10 January. The BJP and other parties had effectively used the incident as a handle to corner the Congress over the issue of women's safety.

BJP and NDA are focusing on political mind games, as exhibited in the running of parliament in a totally insensitive manner and road-rolling their personal political agenda ' says Rahul Gandhi.

Taking lonely lead for his party, Union minister VK Singh has joined his voice to the national outrage.

In the Unnao case the rape survivor's father has died in police custody while the accused is a BJP MLA.
