Donald Trump on Syria strikes: 'Mission Accomplished!'

The objective was to prevent the future use of chemical weapons in the future.

Russian Federation said it was being "threatened" and said the air strikes "will not be left without consequences" in a statement from its ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, posted on Twitter.

He added: "I clearly declare the president of the United States, the president of France and the British prime minister are criminals". Defence secretary Gavin Wiliamson told BBC Radio 4: "Our service personnel have played an important role in terms of degrading the ability of the Syrian regime to use chemical weapons in the future, but also it sends a clear message to the Syrian regime that they can not continue to use chemical weapons with impunity".

"On the question of chemical weapons, there is a red line that must not be crossed, and if it should be crossed again, there will be another intervention", Le Drian said.

Several large explosions have been heard in the Syrian capital Damascus.

A third target was a chemical weapons equipment storage site and command post, also near Homs.

Friday's military campaign targeted research facilities that are thought to have been involved in the production of chemical weapons. There was no indication of US losses in the strikes Friday evening, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis noted.

McKenzie defended the attacks in response to questions about the proof that Assad had used chemical weapons on civilians.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday morning thanked France and the United Kingdom for their participation in the airstrikes against positions of Assad's government, which has been engaged in a seven-year-old civil war against rebel groups and is backed by Russian Federation and Shia militias. Assad has vehemently denied launching the chemical attack. He was clearly upset about the fact that the USA and its allies had failed to wait for this assessment by the worldwide inspectors from the OPCW. He added the US did not rule out that sarin gas was used as well.

The one-page draft resolution, read by Russia's Permanent Envoy at the UN Vasily Nevenzya, condemned the military action against Syria and called on the three Western countries to "halt the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic immediately and without any delay" and refrain from further use-of-force actions in violation of the UN Charter.

"Very soon, very soon, we're coming out", Trump said to a crowd in Richfield, Ohio, on March 30.

"What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?" "Nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep".

While Syria tried to pre-empt the press conference by publicly claiming that Syrian air defenses shot down 71 of 103 missiles, McKenzie said: "No Syrian weapon had any effect on anything we did", and that the U.S.

The other is the USA wants to undermine Russia's influence in Syria as it always attempts to foment troubles in areas where Russian Federation is enjoying influence. There were reports that various air bases had been evacuated.

"By its actions, the U.S. is increasingly aggravating the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria, bringing sufferings to civilians and actually conniving at terrorists who have been tormenting the Syrian people for seven years and provoking a new wave of refugees from that country and the region as a whole", it said.

US President Donald Trump took to Twitter to hail a "perfectly executed strike" after he had authorised a series of missile attacks against Syria. He authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017 in retaliation for Assad's use of sarin gas against civilians.

Facilities still remain operational with the capability to contribute to continued development of chemical weapons, but the USA military insist a "severe blow" has been dealt.

It remains unclear, however, whether the latest strikes will be able to convince Assad and his powerful supporters that they must reconsider their approach. Trump also warned Russian Federation and Iran not to stand by their ally in Damascus.

Two B-1 bombers fired 19 of the missiles.
