The birdie run, said Spieth, was simply down to a glove switch on the 13 fairway after his hands had been getting sweaty.

Sergio Garcia can't believe what's unfolding on the 15th hole as he loses five balls in the water and shoots 13.

He's certainly off to a good start in his quest for No. 4.

Danny Willett, victor two years ago, and fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, were both five over par but recovered two shots to post rounds of 75, Willett making three birdies on the back nine. He made five straight birdies, a career best for him in the majors.

Finau turned in a dazzling round just 24 hours after dislocating his left ankle while celebrating a hole-in-one during the Par 3 Contest. He actually popped it back into place.

Doug Ghim carried the flag for the seven amateurs at the Masters by holing out for eagle on the 18th hole for an even-par 72. Ghim qualified for the Masters by finishing second in the U.S. Amateur last summer. His first-round scoring average this season coming into the Masters was 71.63, which had him ranked 170th on the PGA Tour.

British Amateur champion Harry Ellis had a much tougher time. He was then a bit tentative with a six-foot birdie putt following a superb tee shot to a back pin position at the sixth. Similarly, there's an old cliché in golf that you can't win a tournament on Thursday but you can lose it.

"I could have easily let it slip away and I fought hard to get back in there", Woods said.

Tiger Woods felt frustrated about playing the par-5s "very sloppily" in the first round of the 82nd Masters.

Woods has played the 15th hole 79 times since his first Masters appearance in 1995, and his worst score was a triple bogey 8.

He says, "That was the difference in the round".

As per tradition at the first Major tournament of the year, every victor of The Masters storied history is invited to a dinner at Augusta National with the menu curated by the current champion.

- There are no Minnesotans playing in the Masters this year, but the first-round leaderboard featured a slew of players our state may want to claim, the way you might try to reunite with a long-lost cousin who just won the lottery.

He was back to producing Sunday-sounding roars at the Masters by making eagles on the back nine.

The four-time Masters champion is far from concerned.

"People have been awesome this entire comeback", Woods said. That included the par-5 15th, and no one suffered quite like defending champion Sergio Garcia.

His score on the 15th tied the course record for shots on a single hole and set the record for the highest score on No. 15.

It equalled the Tom Weiskopf in 1980 on the par-three 12th and Japan's Tommy Nakajima on the par-five 13th in 1978. The previous high score on the hole was an 11.

Everything about his opening-round showing is a huge positive for Spieth.

Garcia rebounded with a birdie on the par-3 16th, but he's now a long shot to make the cut Friday. Justin Thomas won the Honda Classic with two clutch shots - a wedge and a 5-wood.

Leishman's chip from behind the green rolled through the putting surface and into the water. Even a bogey on the final hole felt like a par the way he navigated out of the trees and limited the damage with a pitch that stopped inches from going in.

Charley Hoffman sits atop the leaderboard at 4 under.
