Harley Quinn spin-off film starring Margot Robbie eyes director

Margot Robbie is assembling a fierce girl gang over at Warner Bros. and DC. What is clear is that both the main characters and most of the creative braintrust are female, remarkable for a studio-sized superhero film.

Warner Bros. now has Aquaman slated to hit theaters December 21, 2018, followed by Shazam! on April 5, 2019, and the Wonder Woman sequel on November 1, 2019.

Let us know your thoughts about Cathy Yan being picked as the Harley Quinn director and, even better, if you have seen her indie Dead Pigs, which won an acting ensemble award at Sundance in January. The film takes inspiration from the Birds of Prey comic, which typically features a trio of female heroes like Black Canary, Batgirl, and Huntress. She will be the first Asian American woman to direct a superhero film. While the MCU have yet to give a woman solo directorship of one of its MCU films, the DCEU has just secured its second solo female director. The script was written by Christina Hodson, who wrote the "Transformers" spinoff "Bumblebee" and was hired to replace Joss Whedon in penning the "Batgirl" movie.

This film looks cleared to start production by year's end or early next year, after Robbie completes Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

There are a lot of Harley Quinn-centric films in development, as Robbie herself has said. Robbie is also set to appear as Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad 2", directed by Gavin O'Connor, and David Ayer's "Gotham City Sirens". She wrote and directed numerous short films before stepping up to features with Dead Pigs.
