Israeli fire in new Gaza border protest kills 2 Palestinians

The motion, titled, "Gaza Strip: prevent any further escalation of violence", was passed by an overwhelming majority of 524 in favor to 30 against, with 92 abstentions.

In commemoration of Palestinian Prisoners Day, which was on Tuesday, protest organizers also hung banners bearing the images of long-term Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Egypt also restricts movement in and out of Gaza on its border. "It also urges Israel to address its territorial concerns with proportionate measures".

The resolution concludes that the "EU's main objective is to achieve the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, with the secure State of Israel and an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable Palestinian State living side by side in peace and security, on the basis of the right of self-determination and full respect for global law". The IDF will act against all attempts to damage the fence or any other IDF equipment. The agency later said it could continue supplies until July.

Israeli Air Force planes scattered leaflets in the skies of the Gaza Strip, calling on Gaza residents not to attend Friday's demonstrations, as the defense establishment is preparing for the fourth Hamas-driven marches in that many weeks, towards the border with Israel.

In the leaflets, the Israeli forces said that it is prepared for all scenarios. Rights groups have branded open-fire orders as unlawful, saying they effectively permit soldiers to use potentially lethal force against unarmed protesters.

Avraham (Avera) Mengistu and Hisham Al-Sayeed, who entered Hamas-controlled Gaza during periods of poor mental health in 2014 and 2015 respectively are believed to be held captive by Hamas.

Away from the border, Israeli-American Hollywood actress Natalie Portman announced she would not attend a ceremony in Israel to accept a million-dollar prize because of "distressing" events in the country.

The American Jewish Committee's Transatlantic Institute lauded the unusually balanced European Union resolution.

Hamas, which is sworn to Israel's destruction, denies this.

"Calling for the "unconditional" end to Israel's targeted blockade is at this time - unfortunately - neither realistic nor an even remotely reasonable proposal", said Daniel Schwammenthal, director of AJC's European Union office.

Medics at the scene in the Rafah area said four Palestinians were killed by an Israeli tank shell but an Israeli military spokesman said the army was not involved.
