Kyle Busch Drives To Cup Pole At Bristol

Kyle Busch Drives To Cup Pole At Bristol

But as years have passed NASCAR's iciest sibling rivalry has thawed a little bit, at least to the point where they can joke around a little bit.

Jones was fastest in opening practice for the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 Xfinity Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway Friday.

In 2002, Kurt Busch scored his first career Cup Series victory at the track. His brother, Kyle Busch, a six-time victor at the Tennessee venue, was fourth-fastest, and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five in preparation for Sunday's Food City 500 (2 p.m. ET, FOX, PRN, SiriusXM).

"He always told everybody if you think I'm good, just wait for my younger brother", joked Kyle Busch.

Second-year Cup Series driver Erik Jones may be on the verge of a getting a breakthrough win at Bristol Motor Speedway. Former Bristol winners Kyle Busch (128.934 mph) and Kasey Kahne (128.830 mph) rounded out the top-five.

The Busch brothers are no strangers to success at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"It's better now with age", he said of their relationship. Any little miss and you know you're not going to get the pole because there's no time to gain it back.

Kyle Busch has finished on the podium in each of the last five Cup races.

" We got a little bit tight there in that final round, but was able to still maintain a quick enough speed in order to beat Kurt (Busch) out", Kyle said.

KEEP AN EYE ON ROOKIES: Keep an eye on rookies Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr. and William Byron, who both posted top 10 finishes last week at Texas and look to carry over that momentum to Bristol. In all seven, Fords will start in the top 10.

Kevin Harvick, who's won three of seven races this season, did not turn a lap in the session after crashing in practice earlier Friday.

Xfinity driver Brandon Jones was the fastest in practice in the Menards Toyota with a leading time of 15.495 and average speed of 123.833 miles per hour. The team has gone to a backup vehicle, which means Busch will need to start at the rear of the 39-car field. That was just.006- seconds faster than Martin Truex Jr. 26th after failing to get out of the first round of qualifying.
