Multiple pedestrians hit by van in Canada

Police say multiple pedestrians have been struck by a van in north Toronto. The driver was taken into custody after the incident, according to the news network.

Police have closed the southbound lanes of Yonge Street at Finch as they investigate.

Video from the scene showed the driver standing on the sidewalk toward police officers who yell at him to put it down.

"Too early to confirm the number of pedestrians struck or their injuries", police said on Twitter, adding that the incident occurred shortly before 1.30pm.

The person arrested is the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident at the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area, said Const.

"My thoughts are with those affected by this incident and the frontline responders who are working to help those injured", he said in a statement.

"Obviously we're just learning of the situation in Toronto", Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

"Our hearts go out to anyone affected".

Toronto Paramedic Services spokeswoman Kim McKinnon said personnel are on the scene treating an unknown number of injuries, but declined to provide further detail.

Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford also weighed in.
