National Film Awards: Newton, Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Take Off receive awards

"Newton" director Amit V Masurkar hopes the Best Hindi Film National Award for his movie opens up more doors for relevant political cinema in India. "Movies made in Assam are going to the Cannes Film Festival", said filmmaker Shekhar Kapur in his opening address at a press meet to announce the winners of the 65th National Film Awards in Delhi.

Sridevi has won the National award for best actress for her performance in Mom. I am overwhelmed. After a 100 odd films, this is my first National Award and I am going to treasure this moment. All credit to my team for the hard work they put in. She cared for daughters around the world who needed a voice and understood the story best because our daughters, Janhvi and Khushi, were her life. "She is not with us today but her legacy will always live on", the statement read. She was a perfectionist, and that was evident in all the 300-plus films she did. On the other hand, The Ghazi Attack is a film that I am proud of, because we faced resistance while making it.

However, when it came to content, regional films scored big. Over the next one hour, regional films and filmmakers registered their presence in a big way among the winners in 33 categories in the Feature Film section.

The Nargis Dutt award for the best feature film on national integration went to the Marathi film "Dhappa", while the Malayalam film "Aalorumkkam" was recognised as the best film on social issues. I was always fascinated by his nuanced performances - he would just drop starry gestures to become the character.

"It's a brilliant film, it's a attractive film and brilliant performances, and not only that, it starts you thinking the film is about something... a simple film; love story of husband wife, they elope, people do that". I had no idea I was even in the running... You were too good, too pure, too full of love.

The major highlight in the award list was that of 19-year-old Bengali actor Riddhi Sen being named the best actor for his acting in the film 'Nagar Kirtan'. Rima Das' Assamese film Village Rockstars, about the music aspirations of a village girl, was named the best feature film, besides scoring awards for the best location sound recordist, editing and best child artiste (Bhanita Das).
