South Africans will bid goodbye to Winnie Madikizela Mandela on Saturday at an official funeral for the woman hailed as the mother of the nation because of her fight against apartheid.

During Mandela's 27-year incarceration for his fight against apartheid, Madikizela-Mandela campaigned for his release and for the rights of black South Africans undergoing detention, banishment, and arrest.

The president says Madikizela-Mandela must be remembered for her role in exposing the lies of apartheid.

"There were times when people could not afford a funeral and she would assist", said neighbour Gloria Searole, 31, a service consultant who went to catch a glimpse of the procession along with her daughter. When Ms Madikizela-Mandela returned from exile she became involved with a group of young men known as the Mandela United Football Club, who were widely blamed for violence in Soweto.

She further implored Madikizela-Mandela's supporters not to be tempted to discount her father‚ Nelson Mandela‚ and that people should accept that they complimented each other.

When Mandela left prison in 1990, she stood next to him, one hand clasped in his as they raised their free hands clenched in fists - a moment memorialized in a photo that became a symbol of his freedom. "She believed it was her calling to defend and protect both from the constant assaults by the Apartheid State". "She dared to take on one of the most powerful and evil regimes of the past century and she triumphed".

The couple ended the 38 years of marriage in 1996 after which she adopted the surname "Madikizela-Mandela".

"As we continue to touch her wounds, we must be courageous enough to share her life and legacy across our society and with the people she loved".

She said Madikizela Mandela suffered at the brutality of the Apartheid government and humiliation.

"I appreciate many things about her".

"She gave everything she had", the party's deputy secretary general, Jessie Duarte, has said. For those of us who've been close to her, we have always appreciated just how much she meant to the world.

"She bore witness to our suffering".

From the stadium Madikizela Mandela was taken to Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery in Johannesburg where she was laid to rest.

Ramaphosa says that South Africa is burdened by the sorrow of Winnie's death, but the people are also comforted by the richness and profound meaning of her life.

Also in attendance of Winnie's funeral was the civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.

My sister and I are doubly lucky, in that we got to call Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela our mother and Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, our father. He continued, "Yet through everything Mama Winnie endured they could not break her, they could not silence her". Dlamini Mandela is the daughter of Zenani Mandela who was sired by Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela. "We didn't do the identical for her", he mentioned.
