Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, said: 'Last year we made a commitment to electrification in preparation for an era beyond the internal combustion engine.

Volvo sells 20 percent of its cars in China, so the market is a lucrative one - and the Chinese government recently announced incentives for makers of low- and zero-emission cars.

While the company hasn't even launched an electric vehicle yet, the automaker believes they can hit their target by relying on electric vehicle sales in China. Polestar plans to follow the low-volume (500 cars per year) coupe in 2019 with the Polestar 2, a fully electric mid-size vehicle.

Volvo Cars now produces the S90 and S90L T8 Twin Engine in China.

The car's first public debut in Beijing is a strategic move by Polestar, which is targeting China as its primary market.

The Bo Rui is also available with a mild hybrid powertrain that mixes the same three-pot engine with an integrated battery starter generator.

At the Beijing Auto Show on Monday, every Volvo on display was a PHEV or EV, which was a first for the company at any motor show. This is the first time, says Volvo, when only plug-in hybrid cars (PHEVs) are being shown at an auto event. Among the vehicle on display will be the X60, X90 and the new XC40 T5 plug-in hybrid.

In the Geely model, it sends drive through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (also developed by Volvo) and is said to be good for 176.5mpg combined.

The early success of the XC40 supports Volvo Cars' expectations of strong demand for its new small SUV in China.

Between 2019 and 2021, Volvo will launch an additional four electric vehicles.
