Putin, Merkel discuss Syria in phone call

Putin said that the recent action by a group of Western countries on Syria was "an act of aggression" that largely violated norms of global law and caused substantial damage to the prospect of a political settlement to the Syrian crisis, according to a Kremlin statement.

"We know that in relation to the poison gas attack in Syria, that Russian Federation, as an ally of (President Bashar al-) Assad has joint responsibility, there is no question about that, but it is nevertheless important to keep talking to Russian Federation", said Merkel.

"We know about the use of poison gas in Syria, Russia's ally Assad has overall responsibility, there is no doubt, but nevertheless - it is important to continue to talk with Russia", - said Merkel. They expressed readiness to promote the resumption of political and diplomatic efforts over the Syrian dossier, including those on the Geneva and Astana platforms, and to go ahead with bilateral contacts on these issues.

The two leaders agreed about the necessity of an objective investigation into the alleged chemical attack in Syria, according to the Kremlin.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the three countries fired over 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles, most of which were shot down by Syrian air defenses. The Syrian government has categorically denied the accusation.
