Russian ambassador warns outcome of United States attack on Syria

The United States and other countries have condemned the alleged attack.

Volunteer first responders and activists claimed a chemical attack by the Syrian government killed over 40 people in the town of Douma, which drew global outrage and prompted Washington and its allies to consider a military response. Russian Federation has warned the United States and its allies against carrying out any military strike. She went on to state that "Britain has no involvement and would never have any involvement in the use of a chemical weapon".

"We can say that the Syrian government was behind the attack", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said at a briefing.

The Kremlin said on Friday in its readout of the phone call between the two presidents that Putin and Macron agreed to ask their foreign policy chiefs to "keep in close contact" to "de-escalate" the situation in Syria.

However, said two other officials, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and other military leaders have warned that the larger the attack, the greater the risk of a confrontation with Russian Federation.

Overnight, U.S., British and French forces launched more than 100 missiles from ships and manned aircraft, targeting three of Syria's main chemical weapons facilities.

When Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's Government was teetering on the brink of collapse in 2015, it took Putin just a few weeks to mount a military campaign that saved Russia's longtime ally and eventually turned the tide of war in his favour. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said worldwide relations should not depend on one person's morning mood, in apparent reference to Trump's tweets.

Vladimir Shamanov, a retired Russian general who heads the defence affairs committee, warned Russia has "the necessary means" to retaliate should Russian servicemen be harmed, adding "Americans and their allies know that quite well".

As much as I dislike the United Nations, it's wonderful to hear Ambassador Nikki Haley shove the truth in Russia's face for everyone to hear.

However, Trump later softened his rhetoric, suggesting he was awaiting further advice and assessment before a final decision was made.

He told reporters after a closed emergency meeting of the UN Security Council yesterday that "the danger of escalation is higher than simply Syria", adding: "We hope that there will be no point of no return - that the USA and their allies will refrain from military action against a sovereign state".

"We are carrying out an assessment of the material damages", the official added. He says a "combined operation" with France and the United Kingdom is underway.

Warships and submarines of the Russian naval task force were keeping track at a close distance of USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation assault ships and submarines in the area, Tass said, citing military and diplomatic sources.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attends a meeting with his Dutch counterpart in Moscow on April 13, 2018.

The members of the council had gathered to talk about the situation in the Middle East, particularly Syria, in light of the suspected chemical attack in Douma.
