Salah nets 40th of season in Liverpool win vs Bournemouth

Defeat for Spurs handed Chelsea a glimmer of hope in the fight for Champions League places after they came from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2, but Liverpool strengthened their position in the top four as Mohamed Salah scored his 40th goal of the season in a routine 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

The Reds now occupy third place in the Premier League - behind confirmed champions Manchester City and rivals Manchester United - while also recently advancing to the semi-finals of the Champions League courtesy of two fantastic performances across two legs against Pep Guardiola's City side. This was the first time for Salah to be nominated for BBC African Footballer of the Year.

"Each goal for me, or for anyone else, is to try to help the team".

After the adrenaline rush of completing a 5-1 aggregate win over Premier League leaders Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday there was a danger that the visit of Eddie Howe´s Bournemouth might be an anti-climax.

With two inexperienced full-backs in Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, you'd be forgiven for thinking Liverpool could be hurt out wide - but they both has magnificent games while Alexander-Arnold grabbed an assist.

The Egyptian is in pole position to with the Premier League Golden Boot, where he now has a five goal lead over Harry Kane, and he is also chasing Champions League glory with Liverpool after the club progressed to the semi-finals.

But, with potentially seven games remaining for his team, Salah may yet challenge Rush's all-time club record - 47 goals in a blistering 1983-84 campaign. I don't care about the rest.

Speaking to reporters Van Dijk said: "It's good stuff playing against them in training, it makes you better. I can not lie - it is in my mind", he explained. That is the most important thing for us, that we play as a team, we play as 11 players.

"I am happy to have this feeling".

There were a few moments against Bournemouth when Salah looked preoccupied by getting to 40 goals, but he made no apology as he wants to outgun Tottenham's Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot.
