"Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is not within our command so, any arrest there couldn't have been carried out by our men,"he added".

The Senator Representing Kogi West at the Senate was stopped at the Nnamdi Azikiwe worldwide airport in Abuja by immigration officers who said his name is on a flight ban list forwarded to them by the police.

Melaye said he "snatched back" his passport from the official who confiscated it and made to proceed to board his flight.

"Stopped from traveling and under arrest".

He explained that the Police were yet to arrest the Senator but are watching his resident to arrest the Senator to explain allegations levelled against him. No retreat no surrender. Dino Melaye, to News Agency of Nigeria, saying that Immigration officials acted "based on instruction".

"We have called Interpol and they said it is a lie".

The arrest, which followed weeks of controversies between the senator and the police, generated widespread reaction Monday morning.

Mr Melaye was declared wanted over a month ago, but he still has at least two police officers in his security detail.

In a press briefing on 3 April, the police spokesman said the police would arraign Melaye and the other suspects on May 10.
