Several inmates dead after incident at SC prison

The calls came during a press conference outside Lee Correctional Institution, where seven inmates were killed and 17 others injured during a nearly-eight-hour-long brawl Sunday night and Monday morning.

The Department of Corrections said that all corrections and law enforcement officers are safe and that the fights were over by 3 a.m. Monday.

Lee Correctional Institution is a level three maximum security prison for men. Mutual aid was received from Florence County EMS, Kershaw County EMS, Darlington County EMS, Lexington County EMS and Hartsville Rescue. The department's police service unit and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division were investigating. The official cause of death will not be determined until after the autopsies. The prison capacity is 1,272 according to the SCDC website.

He says the fights started in one unit and appeared to be contained before suddenly starting in two more units.

Lee County Sheriff's Office also responded to the incident.

Emergency services from several SC counties responded to the "mass casualty incident", Lee County Fire wrote in a tweet. One inmate killed another in February this year.
