Strikes Hit Syria as Country Had 'chance for Peaceful Future': Moscow

"Russia in the most serious way condemns the attack on Syria, where Russian military servicemen help the legitimate government to fight terrorism", Putin said.

The diplomat once again squarely pinned the blame for the alleged chemical attack in the town of Douma on the Syrian government, citing "large amount of credible reporting" on the incident. Russian Federation had sat idle back then, but this time, it had threatened to retaliate.

"I will tell you that, first of all, did a chemical weapons attack happen?" Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said that images of victims of the purported attack were fakes staged with "Britain's direct involvement", without providing evidence.

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, told reporters "The situation (in Syria) is very risky".

Russian Federation on Saturday called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council as Moscow said it would consider supplying S-300 missile systems to Syria following US -led strikes.

A year ago, Putin was nurturing hopes for better ties with the USA under President Donald Trump.

As fears of a Russia-West military confrontation mounted, United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres told an emergency meeting of the Security Council that the highly volatile situation risked "escalation, fragmentation and division as far as the eye can see with profound regional and global ramifications".

"Any use of chemical weapons is abhorrent".

The US Treasury on April 6 announced sanctions on seven Russian oligarchs and 12 companies they own or control, saying they were profiting from a Russian state engaged in "malign activities" around the world. The US and its allies, Nebenzia alleged, are setting the stage to "unleash a military scenario against Syria".

"The Russian ambassador to the United Nations said the western attacks of this morning on Syria were an "act of aggression" against a sovereign state and accused the US, UK and France of "diplomatic hooliganism" ".

"Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible", added the envoy, after President Donald Trump directly called out his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over his support for the Assad regime.

Syrian air defense units downed 71 out of 103 missiles launched by the U.S. and its allies, it said.

Russia's foreign minister says Moscow has received a document from a Swiss lab that analyzed the samples in the nerve agent poisoning of an ex-Russian spy, which points at a Western-designed nerve agent as a likely cause.

Russian Federation continues to dispute that the attack took place at all. That had led to feverish speculation on Russian television, and from some Russian politicians, that a USA strike on Syria could quickly devolve into a nuclear standoff as risky as the Cuban missile crisis.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said France has proof that the Syrian government launched chlorine gas attacks and that France would not tolerate "regimes that think everything is permitted".
