Tax season wraps up, IRS scams increase

Believe it or not, the process of filing an extension on your taxes is probably a lot more painless than you think.

They must be filed by midnight April 17. They say they will not initially contact you through email, text, social media or the phone.

You're probably wondering about this basic question: How can I file for an extension?

Local police departments in the Valley are warning that even though it is tax season, if you get a call from the Internal Revenue Service Agency (IRA), it is most likely a scam.


If you plan to submit an extension form to the IRS, you must submit form 4868.

If a taxpayer is requiring more time to file taxes, they can apply for a 6-month extension by filling out Form 204 by Tuesday.

At H&R Block in Tyler, tax analyst's see a large influx of customers the last few days before the deadline.

Credit Karma Tax GM explained that there is a "good chance that the perceived complexities of reporting cryptocurrency gains are pushing filers to wait until the very last minute". In fact, they're lower than they've ever been in the past 15 years, primarily due to a reduction of the IRS' budget according to the New York Post. If you file by mail, as long as your return is postmarked before the deadline, it will be accepted. Then, subtract this year's withholdings and estimated payments you made over the course of the year, and send the difference to the IRS this year.
