United States to announce new economic sanctions on Russian Federation

Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday that a new round of sanctions will target Russian companies that aid Syria's chemical weapons capabilities.

A Kremlin statement said Putin and Rouhani agreed that the Western strikes had damaged the chances of achieving a political resolution in the multi-sided, seven-year conflict that has killed at least half a million people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Saturday that the strikes had been carried out in violation of norms and principles of the global law.

Haley said the three USA goals for accomplishing its mission are making sure chemical weapons are not used in a way that could harm US national interests, defeating the Islamic State group and having a good vantage point to watch what Iran is doing.

But the three countries said the strikes were limited to Syria's chemical weapons capabilities and not aimed at toppling Assad or intervening in the civil war.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said on ABC's This Week that while the airstrikes on Syria were proportional and justifiable, they don't "solve the problem that we do not have an overall comprehensive strategy for dealing with Syria".

The military said there were three targets: the Barzah chemical weapons research and development site in the Damascus area; a chemical weapons storage facility near Homs; and a chemical weapons "bunker" a few miles from the second target.

"It ended up being a very measured attack", said John Kilduff, a partner at Again Capital Management in NY.

The OPCW inspectors will not assign blame for attacks.

"It is our understanding the Russians may have visited the attack site".

President Donald Trump said the strikes had accomplished their aim of undermining efforts by the Syrian government to produce and use chemical weapons again in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Senior members of the lower house of parliament have said they are considering legislation to give the Kremlin powers to ban or restrict a list of US imports.

"This is not about regime change".

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria".

The US ambassador in Moscow, John Huntsman, said in a video, "Before we took action, the United States communicated with" Russia to "reduce the danger of any Russian or civilian casualties".

"Ten days ago, President Trump wanted to withdraw from Syria", Macron said.

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations is expected to announce a new round of economic sanctions against Russian Federation for its backing of Syrian President Bashar al Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons.

Reports earlier this week claimed that the United States military would notify its Russian counterparts of potential targets before a strike.

The Russian rouble and shares in some of Russia's biggest companies slid lower on Monday, dragged down by the threat of new USA sanctions and lower oil prices.
