Indore is India's cleanest cities

Chandigarh was ranked as the third most clean city.

Contrary to the expectations and much to the disappointment of the denizens of the city, port city Vizag has failed to maintain its ranking in the Swachh Survekshan for 2018. New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been declared as the cleanest city among municipal bodies with less than three lakh population, while Greater Mumbai was found to be the cleanest among all State capitals.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Wednesday announced the results of the Swachh Survekshan 2018 survey where Indore secured the first position followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh for the title of the cleanest cities in the country. This year, the survey has covered 4,203 cities, while in 2017 only 434 cities were surveyed. This time it was conducted for around 4,203 cities. Other categories included the fastest moving big city, best cantonment, best as per citizens' feedback, best city in solid waste management, innovation and best practices among others.

However, it is also to be noted that unlike the first two times when the city bagged the top slot in the country and dropped to the fifth spot past year, this time Mysuru has to be satisfied with the medium city category top award.

Delhi Cantonment has been adjudged the best Cantonment Board in the country, followed by Almora and Ranikhet Board in Uttrakhand. "You have to wait to get the details of rankings of all cities, including the ones that did badly", an official said. It enhanced the scope to cover a record number of Urban Local Bodies impacting around 40 crore urban citizens by 2700 assessors. The Government said only 434 municipal areas having one lakh or more population were ranked on sanitation parameters.

The 2018 survey covered 4,203 such areas. "The survey was organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, under the aegis of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban)", Puri said.

Citizens Feedback: To collect feedback directly from citizens and monitor the performance of Swachhata App, a citizens grievance Mobile App. The city which has a population between 5-10 lakh comes in medium city section.
