Jets falter early on, Vegas nabs series lead

The Jets' furious third period push made overtime feel inevitable.

Marc Andre-Fleury was as sharp as ever in net with 33 saves, but he didn't have to do much for the first half of the game.

"I may put it back into hockey tickets", she said. I don't even think he was looking.

Fleury was smiling, as usual.

As if all of that was not enough, he also picked up an assist on Marchessault's empty-net goal in the closing seconds to help put the game away.

The Flower shut the door in Game 3. No margin for error for Fleury.

That's going to change quickly if Marchessault's tear leads the Golden Knights to two more wins and a Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

Fleury was better. He was simply brilliant.

Of his game-saving stops against Scheifele, he said: "It just tried to reach and get a piece of it". "But they had a pretty good goalie in net".

We have to talk about Marc-Andre Fleury again because, well, he was making things happen for the Vegas Golden Knights yet again on Wednesday night. "I thought I'd have a little smile by myself". "They were good chances [for Scheifele] and I was happy to get [saves], especially that second one". It hit my toe and came right back in the middle of the slot, so that was not ideal.

There are a lot of reasons this miraculous season is occurring for the Golden Knights, and luck is far down the list.

"We know that was [more like] our game", Scheifele said of the third period.

But if you told Fleury in October that he'd be this close to his fourth ring, he said he would have laughed. No word on if it was a wet Wheeler - but Brad Marchand wasn't on the ice. "I was actually pooh-poohed a lot because people were saying, 'Why did you pick two underdogs?' Well, I believe in this".

The vivacity from the pregame show and Vegas's quick start dissipated to a degree as the fans sat nervously through what was now a one-goal game.

"That's Fleury", Gallant said. The guy made some incredible saves. "But we're still rooting for them". A Game 6, if necessary would be May 22 back in Las Vegas and a Game 7 would be May 24 in Winnipeg. It's the first time they trail in a series in 2018. He topped out within 30 seconds of the first home game of the series against the Winnipeg Jets. If Vegas wins it - still a big if at this point, but we're just playing with hypotheticals here - that would be his fourth. Surely, the homecourt advantage has shifted to the other team after the defeat but the Jets can have a strong motivation to get the hold of it in Game 3. Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice said he knew in the morning that Ehlers would not play, but refused to elaborate on the nature of Ehlers' ailment. "We're going to have to be able to handle that". It would be rare that you lead the [playoffs] straight through. Unless the price is insane, make sure he's in your lineup for Game 4.

Game 3 was definitely not the Jets' finest, at least not in the first period. Winnipeg failed to register a shot on its lone power play, and almost gave up a goal seconds after it expired.

But then something clicked. "We just didn't have it off the start and you can't get behind like that". "We just felt short". With his two goals, Scheifele now owns the National Hockey League record for most goals scored on the road in a single playoffs with 11, surpassing Sidney Crosby and Joe Mullen, each with 10. Of his 14 goals, 11 have come away from Bell MTS Place. "He made a good play on it".
