Microsoft to Launch Cheaper Tablet Line to Rival Apple's iPad

Microsoft to Launch Cheaper Tablet Line to Rival Apple's iPad

Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to launch low-priced Surface tablets to give a stiff competition to Apple's dominance in the tablet market with its iPad lineup. Assuming Bloomberg's informants are correct, we should see a newer, more affordable Surface tablet appear later this year. The move is aimed at taking market share from Apple's iPad, which dominates the lower-cost tablet market. In addition, the surface tablets are also expected to arrive with rounded edges like the standard iPads.

While the reports claim the device will be 20% lighter than the current Surface Pro and will be the first in the range to offer USB-C connectivity, the flaw in this masterplan is evident. For your reference, the Surface Pro can last up to 13 hours on a single charge.

Alongside the devices, Microsoft plans to launch a cheaper keyboard cover, stylus and mouse - the current package costs $160.

There will be versions with 64 and 128 GB of storage, and models that connect to LTE cellular networks. Like Microsoft's other devices, it will run Windows 10 Pro. Standard Windows applications, though, could not run on the device, which left the Surface RT bereft of software. Seeing that the Surface line isn't always bundled with a cover; and picking one up can easily set customers back by several hundred ringgit. I think the target market of students and schools is correct, but some perceived threat from iPads isn't the reason that Microsoft is launching a cheaper device: It's all about Chromebooks.

Microsoft scrapped the Surface RT lineup as a result of lackluster sales and disappointing reviews, and chose to focus on its high-end devices instead. This pricing will put it in the same league with Apple's new 9.7-inch iPad. Microsoft may have decided it was time to change that; the rumored tablets would upgrade previous offerings in a big way. It will continue to have the kickstand for upright typing and watching video.
