Pep Guardiola quashes Sergio Agüero to Atlético rumours

Pep Guardiola is confident forwards Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling will remain at Manchester City to spearhead the club's Premier League title defence next season.

He then added: "I said, maybe 1000 times, [he'll stay] until he decides his time here is over".

Guardiola has played down the speculation, however, with the City manager expecting to have the club's record goalscorer at his disposal once again entering the 2018-19 campaign. "Sergio is going to stay until he decides his time is over". "I said it many times last season, this season, and today".

Guardiola said: "I think it's not going to happen".

Aguero, who turns 30 next month and has scored 199 goals for City in all competitions, is under contact at the Etihad until 2020 and has stated he intends to return to his homeland and play for boyhood club Independiente at that stage.

The relationship between the two has been complicated, albeit increasingly functional, ever since Guardiola arrived at City in 2016, and any potential exit this summer is likely to provoke something of a blame game, with club and player likely to claim the other is responsible for the transfer. There was a high investment last season. "My desire is it will not happen, but I don't know". Now we are going to change some details, like Yaya (Toure) is leaving, but not too much.

"We all want him (Sterling) to stay as long as possible", Guardiola said.

"Maybe I will be concerned by that and maybe they will be in the line-up, maybe they will play".

Meanwhile, Guardiola has branded Premier League rules that require a player to have made five appearances to qualify for a winner's medal as "ridiculous".

Neither received a medal during the official presentation ceremony after last Sunday's game against Huddersfield because they have only appeared in four Premier League games each.

According to those sources, while Guardiola says it is Aguero who will decide when he leaves, the reality is that he would be happy to sanction a sale. "They didn't play because of my decisions".
