RTÉ and TV3 swap Champions League nights in major shake-up

RTÉ and TV3 swap Champions League nights in major shake-up

News broke earlier today that TV3 had snapped up the majority of the rights to Europe's top competition for the next three seasons. It is unclear how Virgin will deliver this volume of matches - whether it will be broadcast on TV3, a subsidiary channel, or via an online streaming service.

In previous years, TV3 showed games on Tuesdays while RTÉ had rights to Wednesdays.

The programme is now available to pre-order, along with plenty of other Champions League final themed goods.

BT Sport subscribers will also be able to enjoy 360 highlights on the app throughout the game.

RTÉ announced that it has secured rights to first choice Champions League games on Tuesday evenings for the next three seasons. "Real Madrid is absolutely fantastic when they turn it on and they've been playing for the Champions League for the last few months now".

Football fans across the world will be eager to watch the action.

YouTube's Head of Sport in EMEA, Tomos Grace, said: "Football is by far the most popular sport on YouTube and it doesn't get more premium than the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League finals".

Are we heading towards an era where every match could be streamed on YouTube?

The agreement with UEFA sees Virgin Media and TV3 win exclusive Irish rights to all Wednesday UEFA Champions League matches, all Thursday UEFA Europa League matches and the Finals of both competitions. "This landmark deal confirms Virgin Media as Ireland's leading connected entertainment business and is great news for TV3 viewers and Virgin Media Customers". Non-subscribers will be able to view the match in Kiev on May 26th via YouTube, the BT Sport app and the company's website.
