Sleeping In On The Weekends Can Help You Live Longer, Study Finds

Researchers set out to find out how lack of sleep during the week and weekend might impact on a person's mortality rate. However, they also found that people who slept for five or fewer hours during the work week and then increased the amount they slept during the weekends experienced the same levels of mortality as people who had healthy sleep schedules throughout the entire week.

"Apparently, sleeping in in on the weekends can be a real help", said Åkerstedt.

Regardless, the next time you feel bad about sleeping in more than normal, just think of it as an investment in your long-term health.

But when the short sleepers slept in on the weekends, their mortality rate did not differ from that of the consistent seven-hour-a-night-ers.

Not having a sufficient amount of sleep obviously isn't ideal, as it's been linked to having a higher risk of developing conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The results show that among people sleeping 5 hours a day, there is a 65% higher mortality rate.


The study wasn't flawless and had limitations, including study subjects not being observed directly and self-reporting their sleep habits. Torbjörn said it's probably because older people "get the sleep they need".

However, according to a recent study, enjoying some much-needed shut-eye over the could have the potential to counteract the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation during the week.

So when Saturday morning rolls around, go ahead and turn off your alarm clock - it's for your own good.

Researchers at Stockholm University and the Karolinska Institute - which is Sweden's most acclaimed medical university - have published a new study that links sleeping in on the weekend to living a regular lifespan.
