Southgate Closes World Cup Gate On Wilshere

Hart was reportedly told by Southgate via phone on Monday that he would not be taken with Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford battling for the No.1 slot and Nick Pope expected to go as third-choice.

The 26-year-old was named in the squad for the recent friendlies against Netherlands and Italy, however, and he is now set to make his senior debut against either Nigeria or Costa Rica in the final warm-up games next month ahead of the World Cup.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere and defender Gary Cahill are also expected to miss the plane to Russian Federation when Southgate names his 23-man preliminary group for the tournament on Wednesday.

The former England striker has urged Gareth Southgate, the national team manager, to include the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ryan Sessegnon when he names his 23-man squad tomorrow.

The Three Lions coach has preferred Manchester City's player, Fabian Delph who was impressive this season.

The first reports to break came in the goalkeeping department as it was rumoured that Joe Hart would be left out of Southgate's plans.

Hart, 31, has struggled for form and game-time on loan at West Ham, and ex-England captain Rio Ferdinand yesterday said it was the right decision to leave him out as it would give a younger keeper the chance to experience a World Cup.
