Both Kidder and co-star Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, were relative unknowns when they got their leading parts, and neither saw many major roles afterwards.

Born Margaret Ruth Kidder on October 17, 1948 in Canada's Northwest Territories, she grew up in a small town without a movie theater.

A cause of death has not yet been publicly released for Kidder.

The royal wedding will be broadcast live on CTV and CTV News Channel beginning at 4 a.m. ET on May 19.

Kidder died on Sunday at her home in Livingston, Montana, according to a notice on the website of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home.

Stars are taking to social media to pay tribute to Superman actress Margot Kidder, who has died aged 69.

She also starred as Kathy Lutz in "The Amityville Horror" (1979), and appeared in movies such as "Black Christmas" (1974) and "Heartaches" (1981).

Co-creator of several Marvel characters, Brian Michael Bendis, remembered the actor and wrote, "I rewatched all the superman the movie extras when we were prepping on powers and Margot Kidder's audition is a ideal moment for the flawless actor". "Nothing prepares anyone for that sudden thing of being world famous, it was such a shock", she said.

DC Comics, the home of the Superman franchise, also issued a statement on Twitter.

The late actress was battling with a mental disorder for many years. "Off-screen she was one of the kindest, sweetest, most caring woman [sic] I've ever known", he tweeted. However, in 2007, the actress stated that she hadn't had a manic episode since then, and she also became an advocate for mental health. She did not hesitate to speak out against the Gulf War in the '90s; her environmental activism led her to protest against the Keystone XL pipeline and join Mark Ruffalo, Pete Seeger and dozens of other celebrities in their ongoing fight against fracking.

Kidder was married and divorced three times. Even after she stopped acting, she still showed up for conventions and made everyone's days a bit brighter. Her third marriage was to the French director Philippe de Broca, from 1983-84.
