"If they (airline officials) suspect any case with symptoms, it has to be isolated immediately", said Dr Fatma Al Attar, director of worldwide health regulations at the ministry.

"The patient was travelling alone on a train from Kerala but took ill when he reached Thivim railway station in Goa this morning", Chief Surveillance Officer Dr Utkarsh Betodkar, Directorate of Health Services, said.

GMC medical superintendent Dr S M Bandekar said Khan is being treated for "viral encephalitis which has symptoms overlapping with the Nipah virus".

Speaking to Herald, GMC Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Shivanand Bandekar said the patient is now being treated as a case of viral encephalitis and not Nipah.

Apart from this, 175 persons were under close observation for the virus in various hospitals in the state, Health Department sources said. Apart from the 14 deaths in Kerala's Kozhikode and Mallapuram districts, some 94 people have been quarantined in their homes while 17 others are under treatment in hospitals. "We are taking all steps to check the spread of such false messages through social media", the District Collector said.

He added that the future course of action regarding the patient would be decided once the blood sample report arrives. He also ruled out the need to notify authorities about the patient's co-passengers.

All airlines and point of entries in the UAE, including airports and seaports, have been advised to keep a watch out for people exhibiting symptoms of Nipah virus (NiV), a senior health official from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) said.

Nipah has killed 260 people since 1998 in Bangladesh, India and Malaysia.

As samples of insectivores bats tested negative for the virus, the Kerala Animal Husbandry Department and the Pune based National Virology Institute (NVI) are jointly collecting samples of fruit-eating bats to be sent for expert tests.
