But Vettel defended the strategy call by saying it was "not an option for us to stay out" due to excessive tyre wear, adding that he overshot his pit box.

The Ferrari pitstop mishap saw Red Bull's Max Verstappen promoted to third spot, although Vettel was adamant a second stop was necessary given the state of his tyres.

Even though Verstappen suffered vehicle damage after a weird collision with Lance Stroll in the Williams, Vettel could not challenge and he believes Ferrari, who have had the consistently quicker auto this year, never had the pace in Spain. His team-mate Sergey Sirotkin was in 18th but has a three-place grid penalty from the last race.

Magnussen survived the lap one drama to take sixth, a whopping 50 seconds behind Ricciardo, but a comfortable 35 seconds in front of Renault's Carlos Sainz Jr.

Mexican Sergio Perez was ninth for Force India and Monegasque rookie Charles Leclerc took the final point for Sauber.

But instead of challenging Hamilton, Bottas - who was only four-tenths shy of Hamilton following a great qualifying run on Saturday - was passed up the inside by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel at Turn One.

The win was Hamilton's 41st from pole position, one more than the previous record he shared with retired seven times champion Schumacher. This 64th career victory is his third in Barcelona. But the Dutchman will savour finishing in a respectable P3 and collecting 15 valuable points for Red Bull.

Hamilton says he felt in sync with his auto on Sunday as he won by over 20 seconds, and highlights Mercedes' understanding of the way the vehicle behaves as key to his confidence. "It's a good feeling".

Grosjean is a man coming under increasing pressure after a poor start to the season and TV cameras showed him sitting disconsolate on the side of the race track before returning to the paddock. It's fantastic for the team to get the front row. "So I hope we can continue".

The decision to perform a second pit during a virtual safety vehicle period seemed like a gamble worth taking given Ferrari had been no match for Mercedes' pace.

Bottas led the first session and defending champion Hamilton the second at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Vettel and Raikkonen did not allow the fastest tyre to deliver the promised performance, and instead reverted back to the slower tyre. Find us on Facebook too! There are a couple of things, as I said. Daniel Ricciardo (Renault): +50.058s 6. Still, I think he can breakout on Sunday at a track he has some good history at. If we don't see those issues then there are no excuses.

"We need to understand why we struggled with the tyres more than the others did", he said. Our problem is we have got to do a better job on Saturdays, we have got to get further up the grid.

"You could probably see from my energy when I got out of the vehicle that it was definitely a great, great feeling. I think it has come together this weekend".

Lewis Hamilton put on a strong performance at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, showing his team was back in business after a struggling start to the 2018.
